A few weeks ago, i attended my wife’s cousin’s engagement party. It was fun, giving me ample opportunity to bring out the new Canon 135L for a swing.
The main challenge of the shoot was trying to anticipate what would happen next. The husband-to-be and the bride-to-be are generally nervous and skittish, and this is reflected in their actions, movements and behaviour. They are trying to be calm and happy, but the uncertain energy is present.
Besides putting myself into as many good positions as possible, playing the jester, joker and ice-breaker is important to put the subjects at ease. To make them feel as comfortable as possible in front of the lens, and then to capture the essence of the moment when it shows itself. It sounds a lot easier than it looks!
Here are my favourite captures from the afternoon. All shot with a Canon 5D Mark II with a 135mm L f2.0 lens. Click through the images for the larger version on Flickr.
